Sadaqah

Sadaqah is charity given purely for the pleasure of Allah. Any amount can be given at any time of the year, but is especially rewarding when given in Ramadan. "The Prophet (Peace be upon him) was not like anyone in giving charity. He never gathered worldly possessions in his house. When he gave he would give without fear of becoming poor. For him giving charity was the highest pleasure. His pleasure was much more than the one who received the donation for an urgent need.

He was the most generous of people in giving in the way of Allah. His right hand was like a generous wind that scatters the bounties of Allah’s mercy. If a needy person told him about their suffering he would be very sad and would prefer the needy to his own needs; and sometimes, would give his own food and dress to the needy person" (Ibn al Qayyim).

  • Fidya
  • "Should any one of you be sick or on a journey, then (he should fast) a number of other days (equal to the missed ones); and those who have the strength, (still, they do not opt for fasting,) on them there is a fidyah (compensation), that is, the feeding of a poor person. Then whoever does good voluntarily, that is better for him. However, that you fast is better for you, if you only knew." (Qur'an 2:184)
The elderly or ill who cannot fast during or after Ramadan must compensate by feeding a poor person for every day of fasting they will miss.
Muslim Aid has made arrangements to cater for this need in countries recently devastated by floods, war and famine including Pakistan, Palestine, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Iraq. The cost of feeding a person is £4 per day, or roughly £120 for the month.
  • Kaffarah
  • Kaffarah is the compensation that needs to be given if someone deliberately misses or breaks a fast in Ramadan without a valid reason.
To compensate, they must either fast continuously for 60 days, or feed 60 poor people at a rate of £4 per day. This amounts to £240.
However the benefits of Ramadan are so great that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: "Even a perpetual fast will not compensate for missing one day of fasting Ramadan without an excuse or illness." (Ahmad, Tirmidhi).
