Zakat & Zakat-ul-Fitr

"It is not piety, that you turn your faces to the East and to the West. True piety is this: to believe in God, and the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the Prophets, to give of one’s substance, however cherished, to kinsmen, and orphans, the needy, the traveller, beggars, and to ransom the slave, to perform the prayer, to pay the Zakat. And they who fulfil their covenant when they have engaged in a covenant, and endure with fortitude misfortune, hardship and peril, these are they who are true in their faith, these are the truly god-fearing." (Qur’an 2:177). What is Zakat? One of the core pillars of Islam, the literal translation of the Arabic word is "to cleanse" or "purify". Paying Zakat on your wealth purifies and increases the remainder of it, also serving as a reminder that everything we own belongs to Allah. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said "Whoever pays the Zakat on his wealth will have its evil removed from him" ( Ibn Khuzaimah and at-Tabaraani). Why pay it in Ramadan? With the reward for good deeds multiplied by 700 during this month (Hadith, Sahih Muslim), Ramadan is the perfect time to gain increased blessings from giving Zakat. How much should I pay? If you have wealth above the threshold amount (the “nisab”), Zakat becomes compulsory. This is the equivalent value of 85 grams of gold. If only silver ornaments are held then you should calculate the nisab to the value of 595 grams of silver. The price of gold and silver fluctuates so please check the price before calculating the nisab. If you do not meet the Zakat nisab you can give Sadaqah of any amount. Zakat-ul-Fitr Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him), enjoined Zakat-ul-Fitr on everyone who fasts "To shield them from any indecent act or speech and for the purpose of providing food for the needy" (Related by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah).

Every adult Muslim must pay Zakat-ul-Fitr for themselves and every person they are responsible for in Ramadan. We have calculated the cost of feeding a person for a day at £4 and will ensure that your payment will reach people in the poorest countries of the world before the end of Ramadan.

If you are in possession of money, gold, silver, stocks or shares that amount to more than the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver (at current market rates) then you are obliged to pay Zakah, i.e. 2.5% of total assets.

If you own this amount for a full lunar year (12 lunar months) then your Zakah is due at the last day of these 12 lunar months
